5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Real Estate Agent

Get Started

Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial decisions most people make, and the agent you choose has a real impact on how smoothly it goes, how much stress you carry through the process, and in a lot of cases, how much money actually ends up in your pocket at the end. Most people spend more time researching a car purchase than they do vetting who's going to represent them on a six-figure transaction. A few pointed questions up front can save you a lot of stress later.

1. How well do you know this specific area?

An agent who's closed deals in your neighborhood recently will have a much better read on local pricing, buyer demand, and what actually gets a home sold, not just general market trends.

2. Can I see your recent sales?

Ask for a list of homes they've sold in the last year, especially ones similar to yours in size or price range. Recent, comparable experience matters more than years in the business alone.

3. What's your communication style?

Will you get updates by call, text, or email, and how often? Set expectations early so you're not left wondering what's happening with your listing or offer.

4. How do you price a listing, or advise on an offer?

A good agent should be able to walk you through their reasoning with real comparable sales, not just a gut feeling.

5. What happens if it doesn't sell, or we don't get the house?

Ask about their plan if a listing sits on the market, or how they'll handle a competitive multiple-offer situation. Their answer tells you a lot about how they'll handle a rough patch, and whether they have an actual plan versus just hoping things work out.

Trust the Answers, Not Just the Confidence

A polished pitch isn't the same as a good answer. The agent worth working with is the one who answers these five questions with specifics, real numbers, real examples, a real plan, rather than general reassurance. If something feels vague or rehearsed, it's worth asking a follow-up question before moving forward, not after you've already signed an agreement.
