What to Expect at a Free Case Review
Get StartedMany personal injury firms offer a free initial consultation, sometimes called a case review. If you have never done one, it may help to know what to expect.
What it is, and what it is not
A case review is a chance for a law firm to hear what happened and for you to learn how they work. It is not a commitment to hire the firm, and it should not cost you anything. It is also not a guarantee that the firm will take your case. Firms decide based on the facts, the law, and their own capacity.
What the firm will probably ask
- What happened, when, and where
- What injuries you have and what treatment you have had
- Whether you have spoken with any insurance company
- Who you believe was at fault and why
- Whether you have already hired or spoken with another attorney
- How the accident has affected your work and daily life
What to bring or have ready
You do not need a perfect file. Helpful items include:
- The date and location of the accident
- The police or incident report number
- Photos, if you have them
- Names of insurance companies and claim numbers
- A list of doctors and treatments so far
- Any letters or messages from insurers
What you can ask
This is your chance to ask about the firm. Good questions include who would work on your case, how fees and expenses work, what the likely steps are, and what the deadline might be in your state.
What not to expect
Be cautious about anyone who gives a firm dollar amount or promises a result in the first conversation. Without reviewing records, nobody can responsibly do that.
It is private
Conversations with a lawyer you are considering hiring are generally treated as confidential, though the specifics depend on your state. If you are unsure, ask the firm before you share details.
After the call
You can take time to decide, speak with other firms, and read any agreement carefully before signing. If you do choose to hire a firm, get the terms in writing.
